Growth In Brum

The Opportunity

Birmingham is harnessing its history and heritage to forge a future rooted in its economic potential and as a diverse, entrepreneurial, innovative, creative and global city.

With a growing population of nearly 1.17m, it's the UK’s second city and the largest part of the West Midlands economy. Its output of £38.9bn, 1.4% of the UK’s economy, grew 2.7% year on year. It’s also at the heart of the UK’s transport networks, has five universities, is among the country’s top places for business start-ups, and is a cultural centre hosting premier league football and major events.

Additionally, Birmingham is one of the UK’s most investable cities with an economic growth arc from the west, through the city centre into East Birmingham and to Solihull set to be the UK’s largest opportunity area. It has three special economic zones providing additional investment levers and has some of the country’s largest schemes including:

  • The Sports Quarter with a new football stadium
  • Birmingham Knowledge Quarter
  • Digbeth Cultural Quarter
  • Tyseley Green Energy Innovation District
  • City centre developments: Smithfield, Paradise, Snow Hill and Park Birmingham
  • HS2 construction including Curzon Street Station
  • Major housing schemes including Ladywood, Druids Heath and Langley

Message from the Deputy Leader, Cllr Sharon Thompson

Councillor Sharon Thompson

Birmingham is a city of immense potential and plays a pivotal role in delivering the government’s growth mission. Our economy has the capacity to grow by £6 billion if we raise productivity to match that of comparable European cities and fully unlock the opportunities available to us.

At the heart of this ambition is inclusive economic growth, a core principle of the Birmingham City Vision developed collaboratively by city partners through the Shaping Birmingham’s Future Together programme. This vision is about ensuring that economic progress translates into real tangible benefits for all our citizens.

That means creating more and better jobs, raising skill levels, increasing wages, expanding opportunities for local businesses, and transforming places across the city. By investing in skills and employment pathways, we can build a resilient, future ready workforce and ensure that Birmingham’s growth is not only accelerated but shared.
