Birmingham’s transport connections are expanding thanks to the extension of the West Midlands Metro, with works are underway to extend the line to Digbeth via Curzon Street and Meriden Street.

In June 2025, the government also announced £300m of investment to further extend the Metro to the Sports Quarter as part of a £2.4bn Transport for the City Regions funding which is devolved to the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The aim is to secure further funding to extend the Metro through East Birmingham to Solihull and Birmingham Airport. The extension of the Metro is a major transport improvement to the city and supports and connects major developments in the growth arc – the Birmingham to North Solihull Gateway - which provides development and housing opportunities along the route.
