Universities underpin the large and vibrant talent pool in the city with 80,000 students in the city. The five universities in the city include the Aston University, University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Birmingham Newman University and University College Birmingham.

Universities are major employers and anchor and spur innovation in the city. Aston, University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University are partners in some of the major expansion of the economic growth opportunities and high growth sector expansion such as Aston University and Birmingham City University in the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter and University of Birmingham in Tyseley Green Energy Innovation District.
